Focal verse: The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is a slave to the lender. Proverbs 22:7
The Bible shows us that when we borrow money, we are like a slave to the person that we borrow from. Our spirits, our emotions and our minds may be chained to that debt as if we were physical slaves. When we are tied to the money that we owe, God may not be our true treasure.
Total US consumer debt, (which includes installment debt, but not mortgage debt) reached $2.46 trillion in June 2007 (Source: Federal Reserve). With a US population of approximately 300,000,000, the average debt was about $8,092 per person.
How much do the people in your home owe on cars, furniture, appliances, electronics, credit cards and student loans? How much of a slave are you?
Only God can set us free. Only God can teach us that He is our true treasure. Only God can make us content with what we have, and teach us to give freely. How does that happen?
Lay up treasure in heaven. Think more about serving people than stuff we possess. Think more about lost people than leisure plans. Think more about how to give than how to get. Think, and then act.
Today’s Prayer: God, I want to have my treasure in you. But, I struggle. Help me to be totally content in You. Bless me to be debt-free and truly free. Amen.
