"He who has a generous eye will be blessed, for he gives of his bread to the poor." (Proverbs 22:9, NKJV)
This Scripture clearly indicates that God will bless you if you are generous to the poor. But read it again closely. It says that he who has a generous eye will be blessed. This means being always on the lookout to help someone. A generous eye means you have an attitude of always being ready to give to someone who is in need. It is a matter of the heart, not something done out of obligation.
God also tells us what will happen to the person who looks away from helping others, who avoids all situations where he will be exposed to a need that he is able to fulfill:
"Whoever shuts his ears to the cry of the poor will also cry himself and not be heard." (Proverbs 21:13)
You never know when you are going to be in need. Things may be going really well now, but there may come a time when you need help, either financially, physically or spiritually. If you are not helping others now, don't be surprised if no one steps forward to help you later. It is just the truth of God's Word being manifested in your life. On the other hand, invest in others and when you are in need God will send help to you. I've seen this happen over and over again in the church and in families who are constantly giving to each other.
Get your mind set toward giving to and helping others, then act on it. Do it and experience God's blessings now and when you need it most.
